I Voted For A Free Germany!

by Douglass on May 19, 2010

If you learn German for free are you really getting a great deal or are you just teasing yourself with scraps of information? I have seen some free programs that are, in fact, anything but. I have also seen some that are free but really aren’t all that helpful when it comes to learning the language.

When you opt to learn German for free or through a paid program of some sort, you are going to need at least a modicum of support from time to time. If the support isn’t built into the program then it at least has to be accessible through some sort of contact information. Yet so many free programs are wildly unsupportive because they really aren’t about teaching you the language. The marketing pros are trying to rope you in by offering a little bit of the free education and then asking you to pay for the rest. Isn’t it easier just to know how much it’s going to cost you to learn the language and then get on with it?

Not all free programs are as described. I just get rather frustrated when trolling the internet and find anything that is advertised for free that is really just not free. I prefer straightforward, decisive marketing techniques.

On the flip side, for those who are simply learning a language for the fun of it, the free programs at the very least give you a peek into the language and help you decide whether it’s one you wish to pursue. From that perspective we would all be able to learn a few phrases from every available language.

If you think you’re going to be able to learn German for free on a comprehensive level you will most likely end up feeling a bit disappointed. If you’re just poking around while trying to discover your next great project, then the free courses are a natural test run for you.
