The cuboid isĀ small bone on the outside of the foot, between the calcaneus and the fifth metatarsal. This bone is so crucial for normal biomechanics as it acts as a pulley for the tendon of the peroneus longus muscle. The tendon wraps around the cuboid on its way to the medial plantar aspect of the foot. When the muscle contracts, the cuboid has to be stable. If it is not stable, the tendon will sublux the cuboid and result in a condition known as cuboid syndrome. This produces pain on the outside of the foot.
Generally the first treatment for cuboid syndrome is a cuboid manipulation to try and reduce the subluxed cuboid. This generally works well. Low dye strapping is often then used to help stabilise the cuboid. Foot orthotics are then generally used in the longer term for cuboid syndrome.
